“Bathroom for Transgender” Reflection
My oral report was called Bathroom for Transgenders, which covered the issue of the 2016 policy of HB2, in North Carolina. The issue being that a group supports the ratification of HB2, because they believe that people should go to the bathrooms that is on your birth certificate. Another groups wants to repeal it, since they find it offensive to the transgender community, that the government is the one who decides to which bathroom they are suppose to guy, instead of letting them choose based on the gender they identify as.
The purpose of my speech was to inform people about the issue, and also persuade them to pick my side. My side being that I think it would be a problem for people to go to the bathroom of the opposite sex, as long as they identify as them, since people could find loopholes, and cases like rape, sexual assault, or/and kidnapping of children could increase.
The audience for this speech was people that were either indifferent about the topic, or the people who wants to repeal the HB2, and believe that people should go to the bathroom they identify as. This is because I want to inform people about this issue, people already on my side are not going to gain much from it. But giving the speech for people who don’t know anything about it, or people that think the opposite way, could help the purpose of my speech. Some rhetorical strategies that I used for this was Antanagoge and Enumeratio, since I stated the good and bad sides of both opinions. And I also listed the main points of both sides.
