“Nevertheless, the gender wage gap myth persisted”

by  Louis Sarkozy, January 08, 2018

The issue presented in this Opinion Editorial is that people believe the myth of the United States having a gender pay gap. I know this not only the title states that he believe that the gender wage gap is a myth, but also because at the beginning of the reading, he says “Was my well-educated and rather brilliant professor validating the mythological gender wage gap? Hadn’t dozens of scholars and economists disproven and debunked it entirely?”. Showing how he acted surprised when a figure of knowledge and authority believed in the gender wage gap.

The author of  this Op Ed is Louis Sarkozy, and I believe he is a credible source since not only he stated outside evidence, but also because “a contributor to the Washington Examiner’s Beltway Confidential blog. He is a student in philosophy and religion at New York University.”

His targeted audience is conservatives that attend to colleges (for the beginning section), and politicals authorities related to college education, and liberals for the rest of the Op Ed. since he stated that “This wasn’t exactly a shock, considering liberal professors outnumber conservatives 12:1 in the U.S., and that I attend one of the most liberal universities on the continent.”. Showing that he refers to liberals more like in third person, meaning that he is not really talking to them, but about them. He also states that “That should be a shock to anybody who cares about unbiased professorships and equal representations of opinions in university classes. I’m left to wonder why evidence and analysis don’t trump personal opinion at this level of academia”. Showing how he wants to bring attention to the fact that there is unequal representation of ideas by professors on colleges. And finally he also says “Do we really believe that sexism is more important to these businessmen than money?”. showing how he is talking to those who believe in gender wage gap (liberals).

The purpose of why he wrote that Op Ed was to explain liberals the reason why they might believe the gender pay gap is real, and show them how is actually just a myth and is not real. The author used logos to achieve his goal on writing the Op Ed. This is shown when he states facts like how men and women make different decision on regard to working less or more, and how men participate on the high paying jobs more than women.
